Minimalistic – sustainable lifestyle
I started my career in IT as a programmer then moved on into Technical writing. Parallelly my interest into creativity led me to learn Jewellery making in silver, and also ended up in starting a small business in London. My jewellery was selected to be displayed in one of the art shows in East London.
Then business was not that great. So had to shut it down and then got into skincare. While was diving into skincare I was alarmed at the chemicals used in it. That was not my cup of tea. When I was contemplating what I should do, a poem that was written by Agathiyar popped up. Agathiyar is a sage who spread the importance of Siddha medicine in India. He passed on his knowledge to another 17 of Siddhars and they all spread the knowledge about Siddha, India wide.
There was some connect and I started searching for more information. There are so many poems etc written in Ancient Tamil, that I could not understand any meaning. I started thinking, and something told me that there is so much that we have lost.
My only staunch belief was that when they all wrote those medicines they did not have money in their agenda. So why they have written them? Later I learned that they all could predict future and wrote medicines for all the illnesses.
Then my Dad was sick and the hospital gave up and I had to travel down from London to see him. When I saw him in that state, I told my brothers since everyone has given up, can I do something that I know.
My dad had pneumonia, his reflexes were not working, he could not swallow food, he did not know that he had to swallow food, he had breathing issues, there was tube through which food was fed.
There is something called as being connected to your inner self, a state of trance, I am not sure how to explain it. I just gave him whatever I felt in that state of mind. And in 15 days he was fine, he was eating and swallowing food, he was breathing normally and walking.
We went to the hospital to remove the food tube, and the doctors refused to believe it and took a complete test. And everything was normal.
He lived 8 months after that.
May be it was a signal that Agathiyar gave me. A chance to apply simple anciently used medicines. And they were all age old home remedies that were practiced in my family, and in the villages.
In Tamil (a native language of TamiNadu, from where I come) we say Unave Marundhu. Meaning food is medicine.
Unfortunately nowadays food is only about taste and not nutrition forget about the medicinal values.
After going back to London again, COVID struck us too, and we took a decision of going back, because when COVID struck us, we were only using our home remedies.
I could connect only with herbs and nature, so we bought a small farmland that was totally barren. We prepared it and we starting planting trees and lots of herbs. No background in farming or plants, and we wanted to do it naturally and not apply any chemical fertilizers or pesticides.
Such a nightmare. There were days when we both just sat simply in the middle of land and wondered how and what we are going to do.
But nature will never let you down. Now it is such a beautiful plot with trees almost 6 feet high and bearing fruits, literally.
We wanted to pursue a sustainable lifestyle so we installed solar panels and we harvest rain water.
My search for herbs and knowledge is still growing because I have not even touched the tip of the iceberg.
When you connect with nature and start living with it, nothing will matter. (According to me). It connects you with your inner self and the frills dont matter.
I am practicing surrender and going with the flow. It is sometimes very difficult and I fight to create something on my own, but that only creates agitation. Am more at peace when I leave to the God, the Universe.
Believe me, I have started appreciating everything so much more and do not take anything for granted. Everything is a blessing.
