Karuppu Swamy Thiruvizha and the food

Karuppu Saami Thiruvizha

I am sharing my personal experience in my aunts village. This happened when I was very young. but I can never forget the joys and the experiences. And what happiness was there in the entire village.

This is one of the festival that happens occasionally in few villages because they have to get the permission from the Karuppu Sami God to conduct it.

if you travel in villages in Tamilnadu you can see huge deities with a fierce look and arms in their hand, and they are mostly found in the outskirts of the village. They are considered to be the protectors of the village. Karuppu means dark, Saami means God.

Usually the affluent ones along with the others go to the temple and ask for permission to conduct this festival.

The lizard there gives them the permission by a unique sound. This is called Kavuli sound.

Once they get the permission the entire village rejoices. earlier for many years they all came back disappointed because the permission was not given. village people believed that if there is no festival for a long time, then the village will not have prosperity.

Before two weeks of the festival, the entire village is decked up and relatives are all informed to visit the village.

Everyone in the family buys new clothes, because the sons in the family might get their head tonsured there in the festival.

All relatives arrive the previous day and help in cutting vegetables and grating coconuts.

I personally have seen some 25 people at home all over the house chatting and getting the food ready.

Chithi and mom were running around the store room, (pantry) to get the provisions.

In the morning, everyone goes to the temple, do the poojai and come back.

For the lunch there were so many people who visited the house for food. Anyone can enter anybody’s house and eat. I was surprised when I saw this and asked my Uncle. He said no one will question anyone. what a culture we had.

Rice is cooked continuously  and stored in a huge room. The vegetables and sambhar were cooked in an outdoor kitchen and people will keep bringing from there.

The people who serve collect it from there and then serve everyone. There was a team of people to serve food. Food was served on banana leaf.

There was so much fun and laughter while eating, and I can remember all that vividly and really miss those days where there was so much human interaction.

everyone came forward to help each other all the time.

what do we call this age as developed? when the only development is in technology but have lost all human communications.

people now need to be cautious while speaking to others, people take advantage of kindness, use people selfishly for their needs, can go on…
